Fashion Out of Context
Description:
The Fashion industry has presented us with such a variety of fashion poses that nothing amazes us nowadays. However, according to my observations, when taken outside the studio, some poses still have the ability to intrigue.
Inspired by Lutz and Collins’ book “The photograph as an intersection of gazes” (1991), I documented my models in non-traditional locations. The traditional places for fashion photoshoots are considered to be the photographic studio or on location where a fascinating background contributes to the glamour of the photo. In order to engage with a large group of people, I conducted my investigation at supermarkets and street markets, places where people would rarely witness a photoshoot and where their personal space is invaded.
Initially, my intention was to investigate people’s behaviour and interaction with the models within the space. The models became ‘objects’ through which I explored “Fashion out of context”. Later, I developed my project looking also at the different cultural responses. In order to explore this, the body of work has been developed in both Bulgaria and the UK where the audience were part of the process and included people from all ages.
My conclusion from conducting the observation is that there has not been a culturally specific response. In both of the countries, some people seemed uncomfortable with my models while others just ignored them.
